A phone dropped in the sink, pool or toilet can go from a minor accident to a major repair if power meets moisture. Knowing what to do after phone water damage in the first few minutes gives your device the best chance of recovery – and may protect the photos, messages, work files and banking access you rely on every day.

Modern mobiles often have water-resistance ratings, but that does not make them waterproof or immune to damage. Seals wear down, screens can lift after a previous repair, and water can still enter through charging ports, speakers, SIM trays or cracks in the housing. The right response is quick, calm and practical.

What to Do After Phone Water Damage Immediately

The priority is simple: stop electricity moving through a wet device. Water itself is not always the main problem. Damage often occurs when moisture creates a short circuit or starts corrosion on the phone’s internal components.

  1. Take the phone out of the water straight away. Do not keep testing whether it still works. Every extra second of exposure can matter, especially in salt water or a chlorinated pool.
  1. Turn it off completely. If the screen is responsive, use the normal power-off option. If it is already off, leave it off. Do not press buttons repeatedly or restart it to check for signs of life.
  1. Remove the case, SIM card and any accessories. Take out charging cables, wired earphones, pop sockets and the SIM tray where possible. These can trap moisture against the phone.
  1. Dry the outside carefully. Use a clean, lint-free cloth to blot the device, including the ports, buttons and speaker openings. Hold the charging port facing down and gently tap the phone against your hand to encourage loose water to drain. Do not shake it hard.

If your mobile was submerged in seawater, a pool, soft drink, coffee or another liquid, it needs more urgent attention than a brief splash of clean water. Minerals, salt, sugar and chemicals leave residues behind as the liquid dries. Those residues can corrode connectors and circuit boards even after the phone appears to be working normally.

Do Not Charge a Wet Phone

Plugging in a wet phone is one of the most common and costly mistakes after liquid exposure. Charging sends power through the port and internal circuits, which can turn a recoverable problem into a failed charging system, damaged battery or dead motherboard.

Many newer iPhones and Android phones show a moisture or liquid-detection warning when a cable is connected. Take that warning seriously. Unplug the cable and allow the device to dry. Do not try to bypass the warning, use a wireless charger as a workaround, or force a cable into a damp port.

Wireless charging is not automatically safe either. If moisture has reached internal parts of the device, adding power can still cause damage. Keep the phone switched off until it has been assessed or has had adequate time to dry after very minor exposure.

Skip Rice, Hair Dryers and Heat

Rice is a popular home remedy, but it is not a reliable repair method. It does not remove moisture from beneath shields or from inside delicate components. Rice dust can also lodge in the charging port or speaker mesh, creating another issue to fix.

Avoid hair dryers, ovens, heaters and leaving the phone on a hot dashboard. Heat can warp seals, damage the battery, loosen adhesives and push moisture further inside. Compressed air is also a poor choice because the pressure can force water deeper into ports and microphones.

A cool, dry room with reasonable airflow is safer. Leave the phone on an absorbent cloth with the charging port facing down. For a light splash where the phone was quickly removed and has no visible damage, allowing it to air dry for at least 24 hours may be enough. However, that approach is not a guarantee, particularly if the device was submerged.

Check the Type and Extent of Exposure

The next step depends on what the phone was exposed to and how long it was wet. A few raindrops on an intact, water-resistant phone are very different from a mobile sitting at the bottom of a pool for several minutes.

Fresh water is generally less damaging than salt water, pool water or drinks, but any liquid can reach vulnerable components. A cracked screen, damaged back glass, loose charging port or worn water seal raises the risk significantly. Even a phone with an IP rating may be less protected after age, drops or past repairs.

Look for visible warning signs without switching the device back on. These include fog under the camera lens, a flickering display, muffled speakers, a non-responsive screen, moisture in the charging port, unusual warmth or a burning smell. If the battery starts swelling, the phone becomes hot, or you notice smoke or a chemical smell, move it away from flammable materials and do not attempt to charge or use it.

When Professional Water Damage Repair Is the Better Option

Professional assessment is the sensible choice when the phone was submerged, exposed to anything other than clean water, has been charged while wet, or is showing any fault. Time matters because corrosion can continue quietly after the surface looks dry.

A technician can safely open the device, inspect moisture indicators and internal connectors, clean affected areas and test key functions. The goal is not only to get the screen turning on. A proper assessment checks charging, battery performance, cameras, microphones, speakers, buttons, network signal and Face ID or fingerprint functions where relevant.

This is particularly worthwhile if the phone holds important data or is essential for work. A device may appear fine immediately after drying, then develop charging faults, speaker distortion, random restarts or display problems days later. Early cleaning can reduce the chance of that delayed damage.

Do not ignore a device that works intermittently. Repeatedly charging, restarting or using it heavily can make the fault worse. A quick diagnostic while the phone is still partially functional is often more useful than waiting until it no longer powers on.

The best move after a wet-phone accident is to resist the urge to test it, charge it or fix it with heat. Power it down, dry the exterior, give minor clean-water splashes time to air dry, and get submerged or suspect devices checked promptly.
